WHATEVER IT IS

What is it that makes my heart tighten and beats faster than Ikem the drummer boy each Sunday Service?
Why can’t I stop this panic I feel like the cockroach in a gathering of chickens?
Whatever it is, if it doesn’t kill me, I hope it leaves me stronger!

What is it that makes my hands shake vigorously like Olamma’s bottoms during the community dance off
Why can’t I wigwag and link my thoughts correctly like Obi at each school debate?
Whatever it is, if it doesn’t kill me, I hope it leaves me stronger

What is it that makes my lungs gasp for air like Titus washed out of a wave on a dry land?
Why can’t I stop sweating profusely like Uncle Chike whose constant belly ache led him to believe he was poisoned not knowing it was from all the food he ate so greedily at his own party without a drop of water.
Whatever it is, if it doesn’t kill me, I hope it leaves me stronger

What is it that makes my whole being cold and unmoving like Ezeafulukwe the king’s statue placed at the market square?
Why can’t I see past the faces eagerly starring in anticipation of a great game and perform gladly to my heart’s delight ending with a victory dance like Omalinze the cat
Whatever it is, if it doesn’t kill me, I hope it leaves me stronger

Call it fright or fear
Terror or horror
Dread or dismay
Whatever it is, if it doesn’t kill me, I hope it leaves me stronger
